Halfmoon - Finding Balance During the Holidays

finding balance during the holidays

The holiday season can be a fun yet crazy time of year. We’ve put together tips for regaining your balance so you can enjoy all the season has to offer.

Maintain a (Flexible) Routine
Routines keep us grounded, organized, and feeling like ourselves, so while the holiday season tends to be very busy, you can mitigate some of the craziness by sticking to a regular, yet flexible, routine. Whether that’s maintaining a yoga practice, pausing for a few minutes of meditation every morning, or doing your Sunday meal prep, a reliable routine is a great tool for staying centered. Keeping your routine flexible is important with travel plans, busy schedules, and visiting relatives. A willingness to be flexible will take some pressure off and is also a great practice in going with the flow.

Set Boundaries
While some things are unavoidable, the good news is that you get to set the rules! You can choose the charities support, the number of parties you realistically can (and want to) attend, and the time you spend interacting with friends and family. Knowing that the ball is in your court and that you can make the choices that are best for you can cut down on a lot of holiday guilt and pressure.

Make Room for Indulgence
Nothing ruins a holiday party like beating yourself up for having too many chocolates or your grandma’s famous sugar cookies. When you accept that you will be indulging in some less-than-healthy foods, you can go back to enjoying them rather than beating yourself up.

Just Breathe
Probably the most important tip of all: breathe. When your to-do list is a mile long, you’re late to yet another holiday event, or you’ve burned the turkey, pause and take a few deep breaths. Breath is such a powerful way to relax the stress response in your body, bring yourself back to the present, and remind yourself of what’s truly important the holidays.
