What is Ayurveda?
Rooted in connectedness and balance, Ayurveda is the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) and the sister science of yoga. Over three thousand years old and widely practiced in eastern countries today, Ayurveda promotes wellness through the use of specialized diets, herbal remedies, massage and other unique health practices.
What is a Dosha?
The three Ayurvedic constitutions (or doshas) are Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Vata (air element): Vata is characterised by creativity and movement, dry skin or hair, and persistently feeling cold. Those who are influenced by the Vata dosha may be quick with ideas, always on the go, ready for change and naturally artistic. When unbalanced the Vata dosha can result in anxiety and challenges with digestion.
Pitta (fire element): Pitta is characterised by heat and inner passion. Those who have a strong Pitta dosha may feel warm to touch, are confident in their decisions, have a good digestion and feel passionate about relationships and other undertakings. When it is unbalanced, Pitta can result in anger and inflammation.
Kapha (water element): Kapha is characterised by feelings of heaviness, coldness, tenderness and taste. Those who embody more of the Kapha dosha may feel more grounded, move more slowly and take extra time to notice and enjoy the world around them. When unbalanced, an excess of Kapha can result in depression, lethargy and slow metabolism.
